Orthopedic Stem Cell Treatment

Orthopedic Stem Cell Treatment

What are Stem Cells?

Stem Cells are the body’s raw materials; they are cells from which all other cells with specialized functions (such as for bone, blood or muscle) are generated, and have ability to replace dying cells and regenerate damaged tissue.

How Does Stem Cell Therapy Work?

Stem cell therapy, a form of regenerative medicine, obtains high concentrations of stem cells to create an environment for the body to heal itself without the need for medications or steroid injections. A high concentration of these cells is obtained from the patient’s own bone marrow or fat tissues (adipose) or from a purified amniotic tissue. When stem cells are injected into an area of injury, they enable the body’s natural healing processes to be dramatically accelerated. The cells can stimulate the formation of many different types of tissue including cartilage, tendon, ligaments, bone and fibrous connective tissues.

Stem Cell Therapy and Orthopedics

Stem cell therapy has recently become popular in orthopedics surgery, especially for musculoskeletal injuries (such as injuries involving tendons and ligaments, bone, the meniscus and cartilage). It offers a natural way of healing the body without the need for invasive surgery. Orthopedic stem cell treatment applications are continually developing, and research in recent years has shown proven positive results. Advances in the field of orthopedics have also demonstrated the benefits and advantages of using stem cell therapies over traditional surgical means. Stem cell therapy has successfully used for major orthopedic procedures such as bone-joint injuries, osteoarthritis-cartilage defects, and ligament-tendon injuries. Stem cells have also provided faster and better healing of tissues.

The benefits of stem cell therapy in orthopedics include:

1) Promotion of Natural Healing

The human body is designed to heal itself, and new technologies in stem cell therapies are taking advantage of that natural power. Stem cells taken from the fat or bone marrow of a patient have the ability to transform into any other type of cell within the body. Containing a high concentration of growth factors, these cells are harvested from one area of the body and then injected into the site of injury or trauma. Then, the cells become concentrated and stimulate new growth. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, this promotes a faster healing process because the time that it would take for these cells to travel to the site of injury on their own would be much longer.

2) Additional Risk Avoided

According to the National Institutes of Health, stem cells harvested from the patient’s own supply eliminates the risk of potential rejection. In fact, most orthopedic professionals believe that using the body’s own cells provides little to no risk at all.

3) Complications Prevented

Stem cell therapy is one of very few medical treatments that has almost no side effects, and it is therefore considered a very safe procedure. Due to its healing capabilities, stem cell therapy also prevents infection and reduces any risk of complications. The combination of stem cell therapies with surgical procedures has been demonstrated to be highly beneficial. Stem cell therapy dramatically reduces the potential of scarring, prolonged recovery, revision surgery and the need for additional treatment – all of which can be quite costly.
